You need your Subaru key fob to lock and unlock your vehicle. So, how do you replace the battery in your key fob when it dies? This DIY guide will help!

Click. You hit the unlock button on your Subaru key fob, expecting a familiar “ding” as it locks. But this time, you get nothing! So you click and click with no response.

Your Subaru’s key fob is critical for getting in and out of your vehicle and locking it. So when it doesn’t work, you need solutions – fast! One of the most common causes of a poorly functioning or entirely non-functional key fob is the battery. Learn how to replace your Subaru battery quickly and what other possible causes of an unresponsive key fob are.

Tools Needed to Replace a Subaru Key Fob Battery

To change the battery on a Subaru key fob, you’ll need just two tools: a small flathead screwdriver (for older, teardrop-style key fobs or metal keys with buttons) and the appropriate replacement battery. A small bowl or plate nearby can also help you keep track of any tiny springs or components during reassembly so nothing gets lost.

What Kind of Subaru Key Fob Battery Do I Need?

The correct replacement battery for your particular key fob depends on the type of remote you have.

  • Newer, rectangular-shaped key fob: CR2032
  • Older, teardrop-shaped key fob: CR2025
  • Older metal key with buttons: CR1620

These coin-style batteries should be easy to find at a local hardware store or Subaru dealership. If you’re unsure of which type of key fob you have, check your owner’s manual or contact Hicks Family Subaru for assistance.

How to Change a Subaru Key Battery

The method of opening your key will depend on your model. Review all of the steps before you start, and if you’re unsure, consult your owner’s manual or your local Subaru dealer.

Rectangular Subaru Key Fob

Locate the silver tab on the back of your key fob. Push the button to release the glove box key.

Look at the area where the key came out – find the small gap between the front and back of the key fob, and insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver.

  1. Twist gently to open the cover.
  2. Locate the round, flat battery inside and release it.
  3. Gently secure your new battery. Be sure to face it in the correct direction, and avoid touching the flat surfaces of the battery if possible.
  4. You can put the fob back together by snapping the front and back together and replacing the metal key. Then, you’re ready to go!

Teardrop Subaru Key Fob or Metal Key With Buttons

  1. Examine your key fob carefully and find the small indent in the seam.
  2. Insert a small flathead screwdriver and twist gently.
  3. If you have a metal key with a buttons-style key fob, you’ll have one extra step. When you open the key, you’ll see a smaller unit inside. Locate the tabs along the side of this unit and press them to reveal the battery.
  4. Carefully pop the old battery out using the screwdriver.
  5. Place the new battery in and make sure the correct side is facing up. Avoid touching the flat sides of the battery, and if possible, handle it by the sides.
  6. Snap the key fob back together (and the small inner case if you have an older-style key fob), and you’re done!

Ensure Your New Key Fob Battery Works Properly

Once you reassemble your battery, it’s important to make sure that it works properly. Take a few minutes to go out to your car and try the buttons on your key fob. Press the lock, unlock, and alarm buttons on the key fob to ensure that the key works correctly.

Other Issues That Can Cause Key Fob Problems

If your key fob isn’t working after replacing the battery, you could have other problems. Potential causes include:

  • Your key fob needs to be reprogrammed
  • The battery is facing the wrong direction or is faulty
  • Your key fob is faulty
