What Is X-MODE on a Subaru and When Should You Use It?

From slippery roads to muddy trails, Subaru X-MODE gives you more control. Learn how it works and explore AWD-ready models at Hicks Family Subaru in Corpus Christi.

From muddy trails to rainy roads, Subaru’s X-MODE® gives you added control when driving conditions are less than ideal. Whether you’re heading to an off-the-grid campground or navigating unpaved South Texas roads after a storm, this feature gives you the confidence to keep moving safely.

But what is Subaru X-MODE, exactly? And when should you use it? Let’s walk through everything you need to know, including how it works, where it shines, and which Subaru models offer it.

Subaru X-MODE Explained

X-MODE is a terrain-specific drive mode that works alongside Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. When activated, it adjusts the vehicle’s engine throttle, transmission behavior, AWD torque distribution, braking, and stability systems to enhance traction and control on low-grip surfaces like mud, gravel, snow, and steep inclines.

Think of it as your go-to helper for off-road driving or slippery, unpredictable terrain.

What Does X-MODE Actually Do?

When you push the X-MODE button, your Subaru shifts into a smarter, more stable driving mode designed for challenging conditions. Here’s what happens under the hood:

  • Throttle Response: Softens acceleration so wheels don’t spin on slick surfaces.
  • Transmission Control: Holds lower gears to deliver steady torque where it’s needed most.
  • AWD System Enhancements: Sends power more evenly between front and rear wheels by increasing rear coupling force.
  • Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC): Quickly brakes slipping wheels to mimic the effect of a limited-slip differential.
  • Hill Descent Control (HDC): Automatically manages speed when going downhill, so you can focus on steering.

These adjustments all work together to help your vehicle maintain grip and stability, even when the road is anything but smooth.

X-MODE can be activated at speeds under 25 mph, but only functions at speeds below 18 mph. HDC usually works best under 12 mph on steep declines.

Subaru X-MODE Snow Performance

Even though we might not get snow down in South Texas, you may take a road trip to colder locales. And it’s important to know how Subaru handles winter conditions.

In icy or snow-covered environments, X-MODE improves your vehicle’s ability to start, climb, and steer without slipping. Even if you don’t live in a snowy region like Colorado or the Northeast, South Texas can occasionally see slick roads during winter freezes or cold fronts. When that happens, X-MODE can give you the traction you need to stay in control.

If your Subaru is equipped with Dual-Function X-MODE, you can choose Snow/Dirt Mode for packed snow or slippery gravel or Deep Snow/Mud Mode for conditions where the wheels need to spin more freely to maintain forward momentum.

When Should You Use X-MODE?

While Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides excellent stability year-round, X-MODE is designed for moments when the road (or trail) becomes a challenge.

Activate it when you’re facing:

  • Muddy backroads or clay-heavy ranch trails after rain
  • Steep boat ramps that are slick from water or algae
  • Unpaved driveways or campsites with loose gravel or sand
  • Beach access roads with soft, shifting sand
  • Icy or slushy roads during rare winter events
  • Soggy fields or wet grass at outdoor events or job sites

Once you’re back on stable ground, X-MODE turns off automatically, or you can deactivate it manually with a second press of the button.

Dual-Function X-MODE: Extra Flexibility

Dual-Function X-MODE is available on select Subaru models and allows you to tailor the system even further with two modes:

  • Snow/Dirt Mode: Ideal for lighter off-road conditions like wet grass, gravel, or icy pavement.
  • Deep Snow/Mud Mode: Designed for low-friction environments where consistent wheel movement is key, such as beach sand or thick mud.

This advanced version gives you more adaptability for different terrains and weather, making your Subaru even more adventure-ready.

Which Subaru Models Come with X-MODE?

Most Subaru crossovers and SUVs now come standard with X-MODE or offer it on select trims:

  • Forester: X-MODE standard Premium trims; Dual-Function on Wilderness models.
  • Outback: Standard across all trims; Dual-Function available on upper trims and Wilderness.
  • Crosstrek: Included on all CVT-equipped models; higher trims offer Dual-Function.
  • Ascent: X-MODE standard; Dual-Function available on select trims.
  • Solterra: Subaru’s all-electric SUV includes Dual-Function X-MODE standard.

Performance cars like the WRX, BRZ, and Impreza are built for different driving experiences and do not offer X-MODE.
